Weird Dream

I would love to take a class sometime that tells you why you dream weird stuff and how your mind can take two or three completely unrelated people or events and smash them together in your head while you sleep. Last night I dreamt that I was stage managing a benefit concert in Europe. We were flying to London, then making a connection to wherever we were going. There were cruise ships docked at the airport, so I decided to check them out during our layover. Well, I ended up jumping into the water (if you know me well, you know I would never do this) and swimming with giant sea turtles and some kind of prehistoric dolphins with feet. That is, until the pilot of my plane told me there were snakes in the water, so I got out. We eventually got to our hotel, which looked like a combo casino/Holiday Inn, where I was not allowed to drop off my stuff or select my suite until I went to rehearsal. When I walked into the room where we were rehearsing, I saw Betty White, Bea Arthur and Lisa "Left Eye" Lopez (of TLC) sitting on a wicker couch looking at sheet music. Our music director was there and they proceeded to rehearse a rousing rendition of "Waterfalls" that they were going to perform in the concert. Fortunately, God had mercy on me about halfway through the second verse and I woke up.

I think the moral of this story is that I should stop watching nature shows right before bed and I should put a couple of seasons of The Golden Girls on my Netflix list.

Road Trip

This week, I (jen) traveled upstate to Red Hook, NY with the company I've been working for, Epic Theatre Center. A group of 8 teaching artists went up to conduct a 2-day workshop with 2 of the high schools from that area who came down to see our recent show. We gave an assignment for them to complete before we got there and ended up spending the two days doing some "skill building" exercises with them, then creating and presenting theatre pieces based on writing that they did. It was a pretty fantastic experience. I especially loved my group the first day. They came into the workshop expecting to be told what to do and were shocked when I told them they were in charge and would be making all the decisions. Our presentation ended up being pretty great.

The most adventurous part of the trip would have to be the accomodations. The first night, we all went to dinner at a BBQ place (right up my alley). 5 of us stayed at the Grand Duchess, a haunted bed and breakfast. I did not see any ghost activity, but I also didn't sleep. The house was decorated in a very, uh, interesting way. When you walk up the steps to the door, you are greeted with a sign sitting next to an antique wheel chair. There was a 4 foot tall stuffed reindeer (not real) standing by the stairs inside the house as well as a 4 foot tall bear holding business cards and pamphlets. My favorite, however, has to be the stuffed otter sitting on the piano bench in the parlor. (it WAS real) When I "woke up" the next morning, the first thing I smelled was sausage and I almost wretched. But the waffles were tasty, and off we went to school, suitcases in hand. We were moving that afternoon.

The second day, things got much more interesting. Our classes wrapped up aroun 3pm and our college contact gave us a map with the house where Suzana, Godfrey and I were staying. It looked like a red house in a patch of trees. Well, after about 20 minutes of driving around in our rented minivan, we started just trying our keys in every house we drove up to. We found a freshman coming out of one of them and he tried to point us in the right direction. Long story short, Godfrey ended up climbing the muddiest hill I've ever seen to try his key in 2 houses, then coming back to the van (not a happy camper--see photo) and calling campus security, who COULD NOT TELL US WHERE WE WERE! (note to self: Never get attacked at Bard College! They won't find you!) Eventually they told us we were looking for a white house with a green mailbox. Well after 15 minutes MORE, we saw 3 white houses together and tried our keys. The most ghetto of the bunch was the right one. It was then that we looked at the street to see the green mailbox laying in the road. I guess someone knocked it down. The rooms looked like something out of a mental hospital. Godfrey, who is 6 foot 2, could not fit in the bathroom and close the door. The water smelled like sulfur. I was the only one who braved the shower the next morning, but I did not wash my hair, not wanting to smell like a rotten egg all day. Again, I didn't sleep. I had what sounded like a rabid cat outside my window all night.

The second day of classes were fun and then we headed home. I rode in the car instead of the mini van and got HORRIBLY car sick in the back seat. (I did not vomit, but I sure wanted to) Eventually my tummy settled and I spent most of the trip entertaining Imogen, 2 of the company members' 6 month old daughter. It was a great trip and I hope to get to do it again next year. However if I do go, I'll be bringing ear plugs, Dramamine and Nytol.

The Littlest Lane

For those of you who don't know (and I can't imagine ANYONE in our lives who doesn't know!) we got a new nephew in January. His name is Adam Michael Lane and he's just about the cutest thing in the world. We were around for the birth (not in the room--he was a c-section baby) and just got back down to see him this weekend. He's 11 weeks old now and huge. He can coo and smile and interact with you. He smells good. He had on Osh Kosh overalls. And he's such a good baby! He was perfectly content being held or sitting in his swing or his little chair. He talked to the lions on his mobile and tried to eat his sock. We can't wait to see him again in a few weeks. Here are some pictures. He's seriously cute.

Tech Triumphs

On Sunday night, Marcus, Kitty and I went to see MEN OF STEEL, the latest production by Vampire Cowboys Theatre Co. Our dear friend Qui is the co-artistic director and resident playwright for the company. Our friend Jeremy is in the cast of this particular show. Qui, Jeremy and I (Jen) met at freshman orientation at Louisiana Tech in the summer of 1995. Qui and I proceeded to have the exact same class schedule until the end of our junior year at Tech. Jeremy and I performed in each other's one-act plays. We all had lots and lots of fun working, playing, laughing, crying, rejoicing and learning together over our 4 years at Tech. Qui is one of those people who, once he figured out what he wanted to do with his life, went after it with a ferocity that can only be described as amazing. Jeremy is the funniest human being I've ever met, possibly one of the funniest people alive. He's a gifted performer with incredible comic timing. It was so good to see this piece of theatre, conceived by Qui, containg so much of his humor, his mind, his soul, and featuring Jeremy, giving it his all and celebrating a glorious return to the stage after a too-long break from theatre. I am so proud to know them. I am so proud of their work. Who would have thought waaay back in '95 that this is where we'd all end up 12 years later? They are truly triumphs.

Goofiness

Last night we went to see our friend Qui's new show (which will be featured in a future blog) with Kitty. On the way home, we found ourselves waiting for the train for several minutes at the 23rd St. subway station. There are all these little hats in the tiles on the walls and I've always thought, "What fun it would be to take a picture below the hats like they were on your head!" Behold the result. It's so good to have people to be goofy with.
